What to Wear for Your Family Portrait Session in Dallas

One of the most common questions I hear from families before their portrait session is: 'What should we wear?' It's a great question! Your outfits set the tone for the entire gallery. After photographing hundreds of families across Dallas and the DFW area, here's my go-to guide to help you nail it.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans. Instead, choose a color palette of 3–4 colors and have each family member wear something within that palette. For Dallas sessions, earthy tones like sage green, warm rust, cream, and navy photograph beautifully. Especially outdoors at golden hour.

Dress for the Location

If we're shooting at a park like Klyde Warren or White Rock Lake, flowy dresses and relaxed linen outfits look stunning. For a more urban downtown Dallas session, sleek and structured outfits complement the architecture. I'll always discuss the location with you in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos

Large logos, bold stripes, and busy patterns can be distracting in photos and tend to date quickly. Solid colors and subtle textures photograph much better and keep the focus on your family's faces and connection which is what really matters.

Dress the Kids Last

This is a pro tip every parent needs to hear: get yourself and your partner ready first, then dress the kids right before you leave. Kids are magnets for spills, grass stains, and mysterious smudges. Dressing them last keeps those cute outfits fresh for the camera.
