Congratulations, you're engaged! After the excitement of the proposal settles in, one of the first things most couples start thinking about is engagement photos. As a Dallas engagement photographer, I've photographed hundreds of couples across DFW, and I'm here to walk you through everything you need to know to make your session amazing.
When Should You Book Your Engagement Session?
Ideally, book your engagement session as soon as possible after getting engaged. Especially if you're planning a spring or fall wedding. Those seasons fill up fast in Dallas. Most couples schedule their engagement session 3 to 6 months before their wedding date, which gives you enough time to use the photos for your save-the-dates and wedding website. That said, it's never too late to book. Even a session a few weeks before the wedding makes for a beautiful keepsake.
Best Dallas Locations for Engagement Photos
Dallas has so many incredible options for engagement sessions. Here are some of my favorites depending on the vibe you're going for:
White Rock Lake | 8300 E Lawther Dr, Dallas, TX 75218 | View Location
Romantic and natural, perfect for golden hour waterfront shots.
Downtown Dallas | 1500 Marilla St, Dallas, TX 75201 | View Location
Metropolitan Golden Hour. There is a specific glow that only happens between glass towers at sunset. It’s cinematic, architectural, and perfect for a sophisticated urban session.
Nasher Sculpture Center | 2001 Flora St, Dallas, TX 75201 | View Location
A serene, world-class sanctuary in the heart of the Arts District. With its masterfully curated gardens and modern architecture, it offers a sophisticated and tranquil backdrop for high-end portraits.
Klyde Warren Park | 2012 Woodall Rodgers Fwy, Dallas, TX 75201 | View Location
Modern and chic with the Dallas skyline as your backdrop.
Dallas Arboretum | 8525 Garland Rd, Dallas, TX 75218 | View Location
Lush garden-style portraits, especially stunning in spring and fall.
Rockledge Park | 3600 Pilot Point, Grapevine, TX 76051 | View Location
Famous for its white limestone cliffs that overlook the lake. It has a rugged, "not-in-Dallas" feel popular for high-end photography.
Adriatica Village | 6625 Mediterranean Dr, McKinney, TX 75070 | View Location
A slice of the Mediterranean in North Texas. With cobblestone paths and old-world architecture, it offers a timeless editorial backdrop.
What to Wear for Your Engagement Session
Choose outfits that complement each other without being too "matchy-matchy." A coordinated color palette works much better than identical outfits. Think soft neutrals, rich jewel tones, or classic earth tones, all of which photograph beautifully in Dallas's warm light. Many couples bring two outfit changes to create variety in their gallery. Most importantly, wear something that feels like you and that you're comfortable in. Confidence translates directly into great photos.
What Actually Happens During the Session?
A lot of couples are nervous that they'll feel awkward or stiff in front of the camera and that's completely normal. My job as your photographer is to make you feel relaxed and natural from the very first frame. We'll start with some simple walking and talking, move into gentle prompts and guided poses, and before long you'll forget the camera is even there. The best engagement photos come from genuine moments of connection, and I work hard to create the conditions for those to happen naturally.
How Long Does an Engagement Session Take?
Most engagement sessions run from 20 min short sessions to one hour. If you want a more extensive session across multiple Dallas locations, we can arrange extended sessions to two hours. That's typically enough time to visit two locations or get two outfit changes at one location, and gives us plenty of variety for your gallery.
